Ignore the misleading cover art (that scene doesn't happen) and the plot synopsis that makes it sound like a slasher (no one is stalked "one by one"). This is an Australian thriller about three girls who go to a beach house for the weekend and end being stalked and attacked by a small group of guys. The stalking actually begins on the drive to the beach house as the girls are followed and run off the road by two black panel vans (they kind of look like hearses). The girls then think they've made it to the beach house safely but the vans soon show back up. There's not too much to help this stand out from similar thrillers. There's…

A somewhat origins story of ‘Grease Rat’.

A time before the vision dimmed.
A time before all that remained was memories.
A time before the chaos, ruined dreams, a wasted land. A time before the road warrior, the mechanic the gangs called the ‘Grease Rat’.

To understand who the ‘Grease Rat’ was we have to go back to the other time, when the world was powered by the black fuel and the desert sprouted great cities of pipe and steel — gone now, swept away.

For reasons long forgotten two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing.

They'd built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputtered…

I have had enough excitement to last me the whole weekend.

Originally released with the equally non-straightforward title Desolation Angels, this Australian thriller initially feels cut from the same cloth as Spielberg's Duel as three teenage girls are pursued on the road by two black panel vans that constantly cut them off and chase them through deserted highways and wide open roads. There is a palpable sense of dread during the first third of the film as the police disbelieve the girls' story when they are pulled over for speeding, and as the vans seem to keep coming out of nowhere, as if they are always one step ahead. We furthermore never see inside the vans while they are pursuing…

"Do you ever get the feeling that we are surrounded by weirdos?"

Early 80s Ozploitation film that feels sorta like Duel meets <insert any city girls go to the country and get stalked by lunatics film here>. The car chases sequences are pretty well done and it manages to build some decent suspense because you are constantly wondering just how far things will escalate. Brings a really grainy and gritty grindhouse sort of vibe.

Seriously though, if you are ever going into a cellar you know is soaked in gasoline, maybe don't take a burning lantern with you? Just floating a thought. And, I totally thought those dudes were gonna go full Deliverance on the guy they took to the…

A surprisingly well made thriller with a bunch of genuinely tense scenes, more Cold Chisel songs than you would expect and a random subplot that has nothing to do with anything. All of the poster art and plot synopses have little to do with the actual film, but that’s pretty standard for a good Ozploitation film.

I love how Australianfilmmakers film cars like they’re characters in the cast.

Also, this movie should be listed under its original title Desolation Angels. There’s already an Australian thriller called Fair Game and it’s confusing.

In my opinion this is an underrated australian horror/thriller movie. The plot concerns 3 teenagers who after taking a little weekend vacation, get terrorised by some psychos. The movies strength lies within it's characters and that made it all the more distressing to see them in danger. The pace is slow at first but it builds up to a creppy and terrifying last act. My only complaint is that the female neighbour of the girls didn't get much screen time because she had a pretty interesting storyline that i wish we could have gotten to see more of. Another interesting detail is that almost every single male character behaves strangely or unsettling towards the girls which gives their situation an even more uncomfortable feeling.

    *Not Quite A Slasher*

The expectation with a description of being stalked one by one, left only a throat cut and a silhouette attack, thus this thriller doesn't belong in the subgenere at all.

But it does contain some moments of suspense and a cast of lovely likeable women, including Joanne, Liz and Jilly. Oh, and throw in cash deposit fraud Pamela. These characters really save the picture and make it an easy watch, but it also mixes different film strains to various degrees of success, and it's not completely successful by the end. It just doesn't bring the energy that it builds itself up toward due to a bit of a confusing girls vs baddies tumble. It's decently directed save for the parts that feel like there's a shot or two cut out. I don't know if its intentions were realized, but I at the most had fun.

Starts out like Death proof (Tarantino loves Ozploitation) with some sinister road goings-on. Near the halfway point it swerves into something a little more light-hearted but not before U-turning back to something a lot more violent. Poster has nothing to do with the film and most people seem to refer to this as 'Desolation Angels'.

  • Review by Peter Walkden ★★

The film begins with a mysterious man altering a bank cheque, explicitly changing the amount that can be withdrawn. Shortly after, we hear a narration from an enigmatic woman. Her words reveal that something horrifying once occurred, preventing her from ever returning Rolby’s Beach. However, she sometimes revisits in her dreams, where everything feels cold. The woman reflects on how they were young and innocent at the time of the tragic event, believing nothing could go wrong. Yet, sometimes, we lose control over our lives, and dreams can quickly transform into terrifying nightmares. The story then takes us back to witness the horrifying events she has described.

After finishing their final exams for the term, Liz (Marie O'Loughlin) and Joanne…

Admittedly I did watch this while I was packing for vacation so it probably deserves a rewatch. Still, I was watching fairly intently and I still didn’t quite vibe with us.

The way that two of the three girls ganged up on the other one was kinda lame. Also, it feels like not much happened save for a few decent car chases and a tense final 20 minutes. The middle was bit of a slog to get through.

Honestly I don’t have much to say about this one, it’s pretty average straight across the board. And so my hunt for more Ozploitation that I actually enjoy continues …

I watched the new Umbrella blu ray release under the original title “Desolation Angels.”

Desolation Angels... one of the coolest horror movie titles ever.

And the movie itself lives up to the badass title too. Raw and intense. The cinematography is so unique, the way the camera weaves through the sets, the way it glides up and down like an all-seeing eye.

And the Cold Chisel songs are all great. The best Aussie band of all time.
